Dramatic Rescue: 23 Gold Miners Freed After 43 Hours Trapped in Colombia
BOGOTA, Colombia – A massive relief swept across Colombia’s northern Antioquia department on Wednesday as twenty-three gold miners were successfully rescued. They had endured a harrowing 43 hours trapped deep within the underground La Reliquia mine after a “geomechanical failure” caused a collapse on Monday.
A Vigil Ends in Tears of Joy
The successful operation concluded with an emotional scene of applause and tears from anxiously waiting families. The miners emerged from the shaft, visibly exhausted but capable of walking under their own power, utilizing ropes to ascend the steep entrance. Video footage released by Colombia’s National Mining Agency (ANM) captured these moments of liberation. While their immediate health status was not publicly detailed, their families, who had maintained a vigil for nearly two days, erupted in celebration as each worker surfaced, bringing an end to their agonizing wait.
Aris Mining’s Role in the Rescue
The La Reliquia mine is situated on land owned by Canada-based Aris Mining Corp. and operated by a local mining cooperative. During the intense rescue efforts, Aris Mining confirmed it had provided crucial supplies, including food, water, and ventilation, to the trapped workers. The company stated that La Reliquia represents a “small portion” of its total gold production in the region, with Aris Mining’s two Colombian concessions collectively yielding approximately 6.6 tons of gold last year.
Colombia’s Gold Industry: A Risky Business
This incident vividly underscores the inherent risks within Colombia’s burgeoning gold industry. The sector saw its annual production climb to 67 tons in 2024, driven by high global prices for the precious metal. However, a 2023 report by Colombia’s Human Rights Ombudsman revealed a grim reality: over 80% of the nation’s gold is extracted by informal operators lacking proper licenses. This category disturbingly includes both artisanal miners and members of rebel groups, highlighting the widespread nature of unregulated operations.
A Beacon of Hope Amidst Persistent Danger
These precarious conditions frequently lead to tragic outcomes. Just days prior to the La Reliquia rescue, on Saturday, the bodies of seven miners were recovered from an illegal mine in Cauca province. Rescue teams in that incident faced a prolonged and arduous nine-day effort to reach the trapped workers, underscoring the perilous realities faced by many in Colombia’s unregulated mining sector. The successful rescue at La Reliquia, therefore, stands as a rare beacon of hope amidst a backdrop of persistent danger and a critical need for enhanced safety and regulatory oversight in the industry.
