Meta Pivots to “Personal Superintelligence” at Connect Conference
MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA — Meta Platforms is poised to showcase its latest advancements in artificial intelligence and wearable technology at its annual Connect developer conference, which kicked off on Wednesday. The tech giant is expected to unveil a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses, a key component of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term vision for human-computer interaction, which he now terms “personal superintelligence.”
The focus of this year’s Connect event marks a significant shift, as noted by industry analysts. “Last year’s Meta Connect was far less metaverse and far more AI. Expect this year’s event to be virtually dominated by AI, specifically AI glasses and superintelligence,” stated Forrester research director Mike Proulx. He added that while Meta currently holds a lead in AI glasses, competition in the sector is rapidly intensifying.
From Metaverse to “Superintelligence”: A Strategic Pivot
For over a decade, Zuckerberg has championed a future where digital and physical worlds intertwine through advanced wearables. This vision notably culminated in the company’s rebranding to Meta in 2021, accompanied by multi-billion dollar investments into the metaverse and virtual reality technologies. However, recent trends indicate a strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence as the primary frontier.
In July, Zuckerberg published a detailed note outlining his belief in “personal superintelligence,” which he envisions as a tool to “help humanity accelerate our pace of progress.” While the exact definition and implementation of this “superintelligence” remain abstract—rival companies often refer to a similar concept as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—Zuckerberg is clear that AI glasses will serve as the “main way we integrate superintelligence” into daily life.
The Next Generation of Wearable AI
While Meta previously teased a high-concept prototype named “Orion”—holographic augmented reality glasses Zuckerberg lauded as “the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen”—these ambitious devices are still years away from consumer availability. Instead, the immediate focus at Connect is on more accessible, AI-enhanced smart glasses.
Analysts anticipate the unveiling of new smart glasses likely featuring a compact display, controlled intuitively via a wristband worn by the user. These devices are expected to offer a range of practical functionalities, transforming how users interact with information and their environment. Forrester’s Thomas Husson predicts these glasses will enable users to “access time, weather, notifications, frame and preview pictures, show captions and translate speeches, allow early integration of Meta’s assets (WhatsApp and Instagram), and display Meta AI responses.”
Furthermore, Meta is slated to introduce significant updates to its existing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. These popular wearables, which have seen better-than-expected adoption, particularly among social media creators, are expected to receive “enhanced AI capabilities interpreting the user’s surroundings and context,” according to Husson. This suggests a move towards more proactive and context-aware assistance, bringing Meta’s AI ambitions closer to everyday experience.
Beyond wearables, the conference is also a platform for Meta to share updates on its broader AI initiatives, including enhancements to its standalone Meta AI application. The company’s aggressive investments in AI development, including the recruitment of top talent with competitive compensation packages, underscore its commitment to leading the charge in this rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Zuckerberg is scheduled to deliver his keynote address Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern, where he is expected to elaborate further on these groundbreaking developments and Meta’s strategic direction.
