American Eagle Soars on Sydney Sweeney Ad Success, Defying Controversy with New Customer Influx

American Eagle Shares Soar 31% Following Controversial Sydney Sweeney Campaign Success

Pittsburgh, PA – American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) witnessed a significant surge in its stock value recently, with shares spiking an impressive 31% at the opening bell on Thursday. This notable jump followed the teen clothing retailer’s announcement that its high-profile ad campaign starring actress Sydney Sweeney successfully attracted a record number of new customers during its most recent fiscal quarter.

The “Genes” Campaign: Controversy and Visibility

The fall denim campaign, launched over the summer, quickly garnered widespread attention, but not without sparking considerable public debate. The campaign, which controversially played on the word “genes” instead of “jeans,” featured the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor known for her roles in HBO’s “Euphoria” and “White Lotus.” This creative choice ignited discussions around race, Western beauty standards, and the broader backlash against “woke” American politics and culture. Critics largely focused on the perceived implications of the “genes” tagline when paired with Sweeney.

Executive Endorsement: Record Customer Acquisition

However, American Eagle executives revealed late Wednesday in their second-quarter earnings call that the campaign’s visibility proved invaluable. CEO Jay Schottenstein highlighted the tangible benefits, stating, “We saw a record-breaking new customer acquisition and brand awareness cutting across age, demographics and genders.” This increased engagement translated into building traffic throughout the second quarter and a sustained momentum into August.

Financial Recovery and Positive Outlook

Financially, while the company’s revenue for the second quarter dipped slightly by 1% to $1.28 billion, the positive impact of the campaign is reflected in its revised outlook. American Eagle now anticipates comparable-store sales to increase by low single-digit percentages in both the third and fourth quarters. This marks a significant recovery, as the company had previously withdrawn its annual outlook in the spring due to global economic volatility. With this renewed confidence, American Eagle projects same-store sales to be flat for the entire year, an improved forecast thanks to the campaign’s boost.

Addressing the Backlash and Other Marketing Efforts

Addressing the controversy, American Eagle maintained that the campaign’s intent was always to focus on its clothing, not race. Interestingly, rival retailer The Gap subsequently launched its own campaign featuring the diverse girl group KATSEYE, which was widely praised for its inclusivity, offering a stark contrast in public reception. Beyond the Sweeney buzz, American Eagle also acknowledged benefits from another new ad campaign featuring newly engaged NFL star Travis Kelce.

Industry Experts Weigh In

Industry experts weigh in on the situation. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, described the frenzy around the Sweeney campaign as “something of a ‘tempest in a teacup’.” He elaborated, “While it generated strong reactions, it ultimately had no serious detrimental impact on sales.” Saunders further noted that the company’s guidance for the second half of the year suggests improved momentum, buoyed by both the denim marketing and the ongoing Travis Kelce partnership. He concluded that “making more noise is exactly what American Eagle needs to do to cut through and regain ground among consumers for whom it has slipped off the radar.”

Campaign Continuation and Investor Confidence

Despite the initial public outcry, the attention generated by the Sweeney campaign appears to have ultimately served the brand well. Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers confirmed that the campaign’s success ensures its continuation, stating, “Sydney will be part of our team as we get into the back half of the year and we’ll be introducing new elements of the campaign as we continue forward.” The company’s stock, which jumped over 24% in premarket trading and is up 6% year-to-date with this latest surge, signals a strong vote of confidence from investors in American Eagle’s marketing strategy and its renewed financial trajectory.
