A ‘Kunda and Friends’ Extravaganza: Nelly and Ashanti Celebrate Son KK’s First Birthday with Star-Studded Bash

Ashanti and Nelly Throw Family-Filled Birthday Bash for Son KK’s First Birthday

Long Island, New York – Grammy Award-winning artists Nelly, 50, and Ashanti, 44, pulled out all the stops on July 19 to celebrate the milestone first birthday of their son, Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, affectionately known as KK. The lavish, Kunda and Friends-themed party, held on Long Island, marked a significant occasion as the couple, known for their private approach to parenthood, shared glimpses of their son’s joyous day with close family and celebrity friends.

Born on July 18 last year, KK’s birthday celebration was a vibrant wonderland tailored for young adventurers. The event space was transformed into an interactive playground featuring a dual slide and playpen, a dynamic race track adorned with cars and trucks customized with “KK Turns One” logos, a dedicated stage setup where characters Kunda and the Lion greeted guests, and a lively bounce house.

A highlight of the afternoon was the surprise appearance of Louisa Kiwana Olafuyi, Co-Creator of the beloved Kunda and Friends animated series, who journeyed all the way from Uganda. Olafuyi presented a special animated rendition of Kunda and Friends that remarkably featured animated versions of Ashanti, Nelly, and little KK, delighting everyone in attendance.

The celebration drew a distinguished guest list, including entertainment icon Todd “LL Cool J” Smith and his wife Simone Smith, along with singer Lloyd. Many attendees embraced the festive spirit, sporting custom shirts that proudly detailed their relationship to the birthday boy, adding a personal touch to the grand affair.

No detail was overlooked, from the delectable spread to the thoughtful party favors. Evelyn’s Kitchen and Cuts & Slices provided a range of organic juices, smoothies, and wholesome food, while Toni’s Minis and Hanoli Cakes NY crafted an array of delightful desserts. Children departed with coveted gift bags courtesy of Hot Wheels, each containing an Ultimate Garage Playset and an assortment of toy cars.

The star of the show, KK, made a memorable entrance, arriving at the venue in a miniature white Lamborghini, complete with tiny sunglasses and a regal crown. The sight of the giggling infant waving to guests brought immense joy, with his parents visibly beaming throughout the entire day. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, Nelly and Ashanti shared their profound happiness: “We cannot believe KK is 1. This year has flown by and we have enjoyed every minute of seeing his milestones, funny moments and growth. He brings us and our family so much joy.”

A Glimpse into Their Parenting Journey

For much of his first year, Ashanti maintained a deliberate level of privacy regarding her son’s public image. During a panel discussion at the American Black Film Festival earlier this summer, the acclaimed songstress, 44, explained her decision, emphasizing her desire to protect the “sacred” bond she shares with KK. “I just feel like I’m kind of like a mama bear already, you know? Very protective. And I just feel like, I didn’t wanna show my son to the world,” she stated while promoting her new reality series, Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together. She further noted, “I haven’t even posted him on Instagram or anything like that. I just feel like those moments are very sacred to me, and we’ll make the decision on when he’s ready to pop out and show.”

In contrast, Nelly, 50, has articulated a slightly more laid-back, though equally protective, parenting philosophy. In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, the Grammy-winning rapper described Ashanti as “motherly overprotective,” while he sees himself as more “safety overprotective.” He elaborated on his view, highlighting the importance of early learning for children to avoid future challenges.
