These six short films, spearheaded by Princess Kate and her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, were made available to the public on Wednesday, August 6, 2023, via the Centre’s dedicated YouTube channel. The initiative represents a significant step in the Princess’s long-term public work, which she has consistently placed at the heart of her royal engagements since establishing the Centre in June 2021.

The Princess, mother to Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, has taken a deeply personal and active role in the series’ development. In June, she engaged directly with the creative minds behind the animations, including illustrators, and met with early years practitioners during a hands-on workshop. The “Shaping Us” series delves into the scientific principles underpinning everyday interactions that profoundly impact a child’s long-term well-being. Following an introductory film, the subsequent six episodes explore vital themes: “How We Grow an Emotionally Healthy Brain,” “Noticing and Navigating Feelings,” “Managing Big Feelings Together,” “Back and Forth Interactions,” “Supporting Early Learning,” and “Creating Space for Connection.”
Reaching Professionals and Families
These resources are specifically tailored for professionals and volunteers who work with babies, young children, and their families. The ambition is for the films to facilitate more meaningful and consistent conversations with parents and carers about social and emotional development. Furthermore, there are plans to integrate these films into training programs and practices at universities, charities, and professional bodies not only across the United Kingdom but also internationally.
The project has garnered significant support from leading experts in childhood development, including Professor Peter Fonagy of the Anna Freud Centre, a long-time collaborator with Princess Kate, and Professor Sam Wass. Demonstrating the wide-reaching impact, approximately 25 organizations, many of which Princess Kate serves as patron—such as Action for Children, Place2Be, and the Scouts—have pledged to utilize the films within their networks and embed them into their training curricula. To ensure broad accessibility, the series has also been meticulously translated into both Welsh and British Sign Language.
