In a recent exclusive interview with PEOPLE, HGTV star Drew Scott, 47, revealed a delightful linguistic milestone achieved by his 14-month-old daughter, Piper Rae: her second word was “hippo,” preceding even “Dada.” The amusing confession came as Scott and his twin brother, Jonathan, discussed their new HGTV series, Chasing the West.
The “Hippo” Hilarious Milestone
“‘Mama’ was her first word, and she would say it all the time,” Drew recounted, reflecting on the months leading up to Piper’s surprising choice of vocabulary. “And then months are going by. I’m like, ‘Come on. ‘Dada, dada, dada, dada.’ Her second word — ‘Hippo.'” The explanation for this unusual progression is simple: Piper’s favorite stuffed animal is, in fact, a hippo. Drew playfully expressed his mock exasperation, asking, “You can’t even say Dada before Hippo?” He happily confirmed, however, that Piper is now indeed saying “Dada.”

Piper Rae is the second child for Drew and his wife, Linda Phan, 40. The series sees the renowned builders and real estate experts guiding families in their quest to exchange fast-paced city life for a more serene existence in the countryside. This theme resonates deeply with the brothers, who grew up on a sprawling 160-acre ranch nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. Jonathan described the experience as “sort of bittersweet because we could share what we loved about growing up on a ranch with all of these families,” while acknowledging, “On the flip side, I miss it. It was so fun to be in the mountains.” Drew echoed the sentiment, calling the filming a “blast to the past” and “nostalgic.” He also humorously noted the physical demands of returning to their roots: “We were riding horses every other day, and I haven’t ridden in years, so I was sore.”
