DoorDash Completes Nearly $4 Billion Deliveroo Acquisition, Bolstering Global Presence
WASHINGTON (AP) — DoorDash, the leading U.S. food delivery platform, has officially completed its acquisition of U.K. rival Deliveroo in a significant move valued at nearly $4 billion. The finalized deal, which saw approval from the boards of both companies and a British court, was announced on Thursday, marking a pivotal step in DoorDash’s aggressive international expansion strategy.
A Premium Price for Global Reach
Word of DoorDash’s interest in the London-based Deliveroo first emerged in April, quickly followed by confirmation of the $3.9 billion cash offer. This acquisition represents a substantial premium, with DoorDash reportedly paying 180 pence, or approximately $2.40, for each Deliveroo share—a 29% increase over Deliveroo’s closing price on April 24, the day before the initial offer went public.
Expanding Footprint: 45 Markets Worldwide
This is DoorDash’s second major international acquisition in just three years, signaling a clear intent to broaden its footprint beyond its traditional strongholds in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Following this deal and its 2022 acquisition of Helsinki-based Wolt Enterprises, DoorDash now operates in an impressive 45 markets worldwide, with 30 of those located across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
A Formidable Force in Food Delivery
The combined entity creates a formidable force in the global food delivery landscape. Last year, Deliveroo served 7 million monthly active users across its operations, primarily concentrated in the U.K. and Ireland, which accounted for 59% of its business. Its presence also extends to France, Italy, Belgium, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar. DoorDash, by comparison, boasts a significantly larger user base of 42 million monthly active users, solidifying its position as a dominant player.
Shared Origins, Pandemic Surge, and Future Innovations
Both companies were founded in 2013, leveraging nascent smartphone technology to revolutionize food delivery by connecting restaurants with customers through a vast network of drivers. The industry experienced an unprecedented surge in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, as lockdowns and dining restrictions propelled food delivery services into essential household utilities.
Beyond acquisitions, DoorDash has also been innovating its core services. Earlier this week, the company announced an expansion of its offerings to include restaurant reservations and pilot programs for robot deliveries in select markets, showcasing a broader vision for its role in the hospitality and logistics sectors. At the time of the announcement, DoorDash shares remained largely unchanged Thursday morning, trading near $268 each, having already climbed close to 60% year-to-date, reflecting investor confidence in its growth trajectory.
