Trump Demands Swift Deposition from Rupert Murdoch in Wall Street Journal Lawsuit Over Epstein Ties

Trump Demands Rapid Deposition from Rupert Murdoch in Wall Street Journal Defamation Suit

A federal court in Florida is now the battleground for a high-stakes legal maneuver, as former President Donald Trump seeks to compel media titan Rupert Murdoch to provide a deposition within a tight 15-day timeframe. The urgent request, filed Monday, stems from Trump’s defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal, a flagship publication of Murdoch’s News Corp., over a report detailing Trump’s connections to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Urgency: Murdoch’s Age and Health Concerns

Trump’s legal team, in their motion to the U.S. District Court of Southern Florida, underscored the need for expediency, citing Murdoch’s advanced age of 94 and a history of reported health issues. The filing explicitly states that these factors contribute significantly to the concern that Murdoch “would be unavailable for in-person testimony at trial,” making an early deposition critical for the discovery process. Murdoch is widely presumed to reside in New York, adding a logistical layer to the demand for his testimony in Florida.

The Defamation Lawsuit: Trump vs. The Wall Street Journal

The lawsuit, initiated by Trump on July 18, targets The Wall Street Journal for its article that delved into his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein, a prominent figure in finance, was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy, accusations that sent shockwaves through elite circles before his death by suicide in a New York correctional facility while awaiting trial. The Wall Street Journal’s reporting, which Trump alleges to be defamatory, has become a central point of contention in this legal challenge.

Understanding a Deposition’s Role

A deposition, a sworn out-of-court testimony, is a crucial component of civil litigation, allowing parties to gather information and assess potential witness credibility before a trial. Trump’s insistence on a rapid deposition signals his legal team’s intent to expedite the gathering of Murdoch’s direct testimony, given his influential role as chairman of News Corp., the Journal’s parent company.

News Corp.’s Stance and the Road Ahead

A spokesman for News Corp. did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Trump’s latest legal filing. However, Trump’s motion revealed that Murdoch’s own attorney has already indicated an intention to oppose the expedited deposition, setting the stage for a potential legal showdown over the parameters of discovery in this high-profile case.
