MSNBC to Rebrand as ‘MS NOW’ Amidst Major Corporate Separation from NBC

MSNBC Rebrands as ‘My Source News Opinion World’ (MS NOW), Signals Full Independence from NBC

The cable news powerhouse, known for its progressive commentary, will shed its long-standing NBC affiliation and adopt “My Source News Opinion World” as its new identity, marking a pivotal step toward full editorial independence under new parent company Versant.

Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell take part in a panel discussion on the show at the NBC Universal summer press tour, Aug. 2, 2011, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

A Bold New Identity: MS NOW

Cable news network MSNBC announced Monday an upcoming name change to “My Source News Opinion World,” or MS NOW, signifying a significant corporate divorce from NBC. The rebrand, set to take effect later this year, will also see the removal of NBC’s iconic peacock symbol from MSNBC’s logo.

Context of the Rebrand and Unexpected Reversal

This strategic move follows NBC Universal’s decision last November to spin off several cable networks, including USA, CNBC, E! Entertainment, Oxygen, and the Golf Channel, into a new independent entity named Versant. Notably, MSNBC is the only network among these six to undergo a name transformation. While Versant CEO Mark Lazarus had initially stated the MSNBC name would remain post-spin-off, Monday’s announcement marks an unexpected reversal.

The Rationale Behind the Split

The decision, according to MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, was “not made quickly or without significant debate.” In a memo to staff, Kutler explained, “During this time of transition, NBC Universal decided that our brand requires a new, separate identity. This decision now allows us to set our own course and assert our independence as we continue to build our own modern newsgathering organization.” She affirmed that despite the name change, the network’s core editorial direction and mission will persist.

Historical Tensions and Autonomy

The name “MSNBC” itself dates back to its inception in 1996, a partnership between Microsoft and NBC that puzzled many even then, yet endured. The split underscores long-standing tensions arising from the affiliation of an ostensibly objective NBC News division with a distinctly liberal-leaning MSNBC, a dynamic frequently highlighted by critics like former President Donald Trump, who derisively referred to the cable network as “MSDNC.” In fact, NBC News had already begun reducing the presence of its personalities on MSNBC programs prior to this corporate restructuring.

Empowering Independent Newsgathering

The corporate uncoupling is expected to grant MSNBC greater autonomy in its newsgathering efforts. Prominent host Rachel Maddow, on a recent episode of Pivot, suggested the network would no longer be competing with NBC News for field reporting, stating, “In this case, we can apply our own instincts, our own queries, our own priorities, to getting stuff that we need from reporters and correspondents. And so it’s gonna be better.” To bolster its independent operations, MSNBC has already welcomed several NBC News personalities, including Jacob Soboroff, Vaughn Hillyard, Brandy Zadrozny, and Antonia Hylton. Additionally, the network has expanded its roster with notable hires like Carol Leoning, Catherine Rampell, and Jackie Alemany from The Washington Post, and Eugene Daniels from Politico.

The New Look

The network’s new logo was unveiled Monday morning by host Joe Scarborough on his program, who remarked that it “looks very sporty.”

Forging a New Path

This rebranding signifies MSNBC’s strategic pivot to solidify its distinct identity and operational independence within the competitive cable news landscape, separating fully from its traditional NBC roots to forge its own path as MS NOW.
