Among the voluminous documents, unsealed on Friday, January 30, are draft emails penned by Epstein to himself, containing sensational and unverified allegations against Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates.
Explosive Allegations Emerge from Epstein’s Drafts
These drafts include claims that Bill Gates contracted a sexually transmitted infection (STI) from “Russian girls” and subsequently sought to conceal it from his then-wife, Melinda French Gates. One particularly detailed email, dated July 18, 2013, with the subject line “Bill,” alleges Gates received antibiotics for the STI. The draft goes on to describe Gates, “with tears in your eyes,” imploring Epstein to delete emails regarding the STI, a request to provide antibiotics “surreptitiously” to Melinda, and even a “description of your penis.”
Further draft emails suggest Epstein perceived himself as a “right-hand man,” participating in actions ranging from “morally inappropriate” to “ethically unsound,” and potentially “over the line into the illegal.” These alleged activities, linked to “Bill,” include helping him “get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with Russian girls,” facilitating “illicit trysts with married women,” and even being asked to provide Adderall for bridge tournaments, despite Epstein, a medical doctor, lacking prescription writing ability.
Bill Gates’ Spokesperson Vehemently Denies Claims
In response to these grave accusations, a spokesperson for Bill Gates issued a strong denial, stating, “These claims are absolutely absurd and completely false.” The statement, obtained by PEOPLE, further clarified, “The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein’s frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame.”
The Unanswered Question of Boris Nikolic
The drafted emails appear to have been intended for Boris Nikolic, a physician and biotech venture capitalist who served as an adviser to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Nikolic resigned from his role as chief adviser for science and technology to the Foundation in 2014. However, the released documents do not indicate that these drafts were ever actually sent to Nikolic, nor is there any evidence he was aware of their content or the unsubstantiated allegations within them. A spokesperson for Nikolic stated in 2019 that he had no business ties with Epstein.
Gates’ Troubled History with Epstein and Marital Strain
The revelations shed further light on Bill Gates’ controversial association with Jeffrey Epstein, an entanglement Gates himself has publicly characterized as a “huge mistake.” In a January 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Gates admitted, “In retrospect, I was foolish to spend any time with him,” explaining he believed it would aid his global health philanthropy efforts, a belief he now calls “quite stupid” and a “huge mistake.”
This problematic connection reportedly caused significant strain in Gates’ personal life. A source told PEOPLE in 2021 that meetings between Gates and Epstein contributed to a rift between Bill and Melinda French Gates, who were married in 1994 and filed for divorce in 2021. Melinda French Gates herself addressed the issue in a March 2022 interview with CBS Morning’s Gayle King, stating, “As I said it’s not one thing, it was many things, but I did not like that he’d had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. I made that clear to him.”
Previous Document Releases and Ongoing Scrutiny
The latest unsealed documents follow earlier releases by the DOJ in late 2023, which included several images of Epstein alongside prominent figures such as Gates, Woody Allen, Steve Bannon, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Notably, two of these photos depicted Gates posing with women whose faces were redacted.
